~Beer~

The bars serve Dos XX light, a dark draft beer, and Miller genuine draft. It's a mild lager beer with 4.5 alcohol content. I find it similar to Budweiser in taste. In your mini-fridge you get 2 bottle of Dos XX and 2 bottles of Superior (also very similar to Dos XX) along with 6 bottle of soda and 4 ltr bottles of water. If you'd like more beer in you fridge just leave a note (and a couple dollars) and the re-supply person usually comply.

If you're a Corona, Sol, Tecate or Bud drinker, you can purchase it in the gift shop for 25 pesos each or buy a 6-pack in PDC or Akumal for about US$5.

Piece of lime in my beer ?

I often wondered why Mexicans put a piece of lime in their beer. It seems that it’s a tradition that’s been going on for ages. It turns out that it’s not for added taste but is actually used as an insect repellant. Mosquitoes, bees and other ‘flying objects’ are attracted to the taste and smell of beer. To keep them away from their drinks, the locals would rub a piece of lime on the glass rims and open bottle tops. And when they were finished with that piece of lime, what the heck, why not shove that into the glass and bottle too! Thoughts of Dos XX and Corona are starting to overwhelm me...

~Tequila?~

There were about a half dozen different tequila and mescal brands available. They were mostly produced in the west Mexican state of Jalisco. I was not familiar with any of the labels although the bartenders claimed some brands were better than others. I was never able to find any Jose Cuervo but that doesn't mean some of the bars don't have it (I'm not a tequila drinker).

If you're into mescal, they have both the worm and scorpion varieties. Near the end of the bottle, some of the bartenders make quite a ritual of serving the worm and scorpion. They'll put it on a dish, cut it into several pieces, add a touch of Tabasco sauce, lime and salt and dispense the pieces on a toothpick to those daring enough to try it. Bon Appetit!
