Customs in Charlotte?

Post by trpream » Wed Aug 28, 2019 1:00 pm

Has anyone flown into Charlotte from Cancun before? This will be our first time navigating the Charlotte airport and I'm wondering how the customs experience will be. American just changed our flights and reduced the time we have for our layover in Charlotte, so I'm hoping that the customs/TSA clearance isn't too awful. We'll be flying into Charlotte at 6-6:30ish on a Wednesday.

We flew through Charlotte last September and had no trouble at all with customs. We had a pretty long lay over but from what I remember we got through pretty quick, maybe an hour or less from the time we landed. Everyone was friendly and it was easy to find your way around too.

How long is your layover time? I believe you will have to pickup your luggage after going thru Immigration/Customs and re-check it. The airport should have the re-check area very close by as a lot of passengers make connections.

Our layover is about one hour and 40 minutes...it was reduced from 2 hours so now I am kind of nervous! It isn't as big a deal coming back home though!

I lived in Charlotte for 20 years and now it's our choice of layover airport because it's quick (don't get me started on Miami!!). You should be absolutely fine with that layover time. Just don't go to the bathroom when you get off the plane, save that for waiting for luggage. It's automated with the kiosks, and employees are constantly helping you find an open kiosk and keep the lines moving. As soon as you clear customs is the bag drop. This isn't a huge airport so you aren't walking far to get to each point before you clear security again. We usually travel on a Wed. around that same time and breeze right through.

I've been through Charlotte several times and each time was quick. They have kiosks where you answer the customs questions and they take your picture. Then you head to the line to see an agent. You will pick up your luggage and then drop it off again. It is all in the same area and very quick. Just remember, if you purchase any liquids at the duty-free shop in Cancun, you will have to put that in your checked bag in Charlotte before you re-check it. Don't keep it in your carry-on or it will get confiscated when you try to go back through security.

Thanks, everyone - I have been through customs/immigration at many different airports but never in Charlotte....and have had both good and bad experiences. I much prefer the airports with the kiosks! I just hope our luggage unloads fast enough to get through and re-entered in time to make our second flight...but you have given me much relief. Thanks for the info!!!

The rules have changed.

https://www.tripsavvy.com/dutyfree-liqu ... on-2973041
However, if you buy the items at a duty free shop outside the US, they are in transparent containers and the shop has packaged the bottles in an official tamper-evident, secure bag, you can keep them in your carry-on bag all the way to your US destination even if they are larger than 3.4 ounces (100 ml). You must carry the receipt for this purchase with you on all legs of your flight, and the duty free items must have been purchased within the last 48 hours. The TSA changed this rule to permit use of secure, tamper-evident bags in August 2014.
They'll ask you at the Duty Free if you have a connecting flight, and if you do they'll put your "liquid" into a tamper proof bag.

You didn't say what date you were traveling but if you have already returned (and see this post), how was your Immigration/Custom's experience??

We were at TRS Yuacatan from September 16-25 - so flew out on a Monday and back on a Wednesday. Our immigration/customs experience was not great, but substantially better than some others! We had 90 minutes scheduled from when our plane landed to when our connection took off, and ended up having a little less than 90 minutes once we were able to get off the plane. We moved pretty quickly through the customs part (partially because when I got to the photo machine thingy, it gave me an X on my pass, so my husband and I got to go in the special line, which was moving much faster than the "regular" line).

Our bigger problem was getting through TSA again. The lines were taking FOREVER, and even though we had about 60 minutes to get to our gate before takeoff, we JUST BARELY made it through and got to our gate. We were one of the last to board the plane...so we made it, but we were definitely rushing to get there! SO the customs part was a breeze....it was TSA that held us up!

Thanks for the reply!

Was it the regular TSA security area that everyone goes thru or was it a separate one for passengers that have just gone thru Immigration/Customs and need t make a connecting flight? Some airports have a separate TSA area for those passengers. There should also be a separate line at the TSA area for connecting passengers. I guess every airport is set up differently. Glad you made it! :33:

I thought all airports had separate TSA area. That's not the case?
