For tipping I take pesos just because it's a bit cheaper for me to buy pesos being in Canada. You can tip in US as well if you prefer. Even for shopping or excursions you can pay in either pesos or US dollars.

Yep, tipping in their home currency just makes sense, much easier on the staff, while none of them would ever complain, a tip is a tip, tipping in Pesos allows staff to have the full benefit of your tip and can use this cash instantly if they wish, without dealing with banks and spending some of their tip on exchange fees.

Really? We were always told they prefer U.S. dollars. I used to always take $2 bills because I was told they were lucky. Then I figured it out. They were lucky because they got $2 instead of $1. Seriously though, now I am wondering if I should exchange for pesos before I go although I have never done than before.

We use to tip in US as well, a number of years ago, after chatting up a couple of staff they mentioned about spending time on their day off converting their US tips to pesos, they didn't go into great detail but it did sound like it was a bit of a pain, I can only imagine spending time on your 'ONE' day off per week hanging in line at the bank converting cash.

I am Canadian but we still bring along a US credit card as well as some US cash if we take an excursion or want to purchase something in town but as far as tipping goes we use pesos, as Leslie mentioned the conversion between CAD and Pesos is a little more favorable, which of course doesn't hurt.

We used to always tip in US dollars in the Dominican and then when we first went to Mexico....But we've now gone to just pesos. Makes sense and its a better exchange rate for me in Canada.

Cheers!
